Description
Paris Quai des Orfevres etching by Alfred Alexandre Delauney (1830–1894) dated 1866 depicting the old gateway of the Palais de Justice.
This atmospheric view captures the historic riverside architecture of Paris. Tall houses with steep roofs and numerous chimneys surround a distinctive projecting turret. Trees soften the architectural setting while figures along the embankment and a boat on the Seine bring the scene to life.
Delauney’s detailed linework describes the textures of stonework, timber structures and foliage, together with the movement of the water. Large lengths of fabric draped along the quay add a striking visual element to the foreground.
The composition combines architectural interest with an engaging glimpse of everyday activity beside the Seine. It is particularly appealing to collectors of historic Paris views and nineteenth-century French prints.
