Luba Attributed Figural Wooden Pipe Congo African Sculpture with Disc Coiffure

Description

This African carved wooden pipe is attributed to the Luba of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its sculpted head, ringed neck and rounded bowl form an expressive composition combining a practical object with figurative carving.

The face has a rounded forehead, almond-shaped eyes with lowered eyelids, raised lips and a pointed chin. Carefully shaped ears stand out from the sides of the head. These details give the figure a composed expression and create an attractive profile.

The hairstyle is a distinctive feature. It projects behind the head as a broad circular disc decorated with a radiating pattern. Short parallel incisions above the ears add further detail. Below the head, rounded bands articulate the neck and lead towards the curved pipe bowl.

The combination of facial features, projecting coiffure and ringed neck supports the Luba attribution. The maker and production date remain unidentified.

The wood has a warm brown patina with polished areas and surface wear. Changes in tone emphasise the carved features and the contours of the bowl. At 20 cm long, the piece offers considerable sculptural detail in a compact format.

The mouthpiece is drilled and its internal channel connects with the bowl. Offered as a collectible example of African figurative carving and pipe design.
