Lisieux Calvados 1852 France Cathedral and Market Square Original Lithograph

Description

Lisieux cathedral lithograph dated 1852 showing the monument above a lively market square in Calvados Normandy France.

This original nineteenth-century print combines an imposing architectural view with an engaging street scene. The cathedral’s tall spire rises against a cloud-filled sky while the detailed façade draws the eye towards its entrance and ornamental stonework.

Old houses line the square beside the cathedral. Their varied roofs and timber framing contribute to the picturesque character of the composition. Market stalls, pedestrians and small carts animate the foreground, giving the view an appeal that extends beyond the religious building itself.

The vertical composition emphasises the height of the cathedral. Carefully worked shadows bring depth to the architecture, while the surrounding buildings and figures establish a sense of scale. The result is both a decorative print and an evocative representation of Lisieux in the middle of the nineteenth century.

An attractive choice for collectors of Normandy views, French architectural prints and historic town scenes. The combination of cathedral architecture and everyday market activity also makes this lithograph particularly suitable for a collection devoted to French regional heritage.

The printed caption beneath the image reads “Cathédrale de Lisieux (Calvados)”.
