Description
This after Gavarni drawing depicts Le Fossoyeur, or The Gravedigger, in graphite on grey-green paper.
The standing figure wears a cap, a loose-sleeved shirt, an open waistcoat and trousers. A shovel lies on the ground to the left, while a pickaxe stands beside him on the right. His expressive face and confident stance give this small figure study a distinctive presence.
The composition follows the print titled Le Fossoyeur and inscribed “Peint par Gavarni”. The drawing varies the treatment of the face, clothing and shading, leaving much of the surrounding paper untouched.
Firm outlines and layered graphite hatching describe the folds of the garments and the contrast between the light shirt and dark waistcoat. The grey-green paper provides a soft background for the figure.
The sheet comes from a group of drawings depicting figures and scenes of everyday life. It is offered as a drawing after Paul Gavarni by an unidentified draughtsman.
An unidentified embossed mark is visible at the lower right corner of the paper.
