Description
Paris Montmartre France — Moulin Rouge watercolour by Gabrielle Canon-Courio (1920–2000), signed “Courio” at the lower right.
This colourful Paris Moulin Rouge watercolour captures a lively street scene around the famous cabaret. The red windmill rises above the entrance and neighbouring buildings, while painted café and tobacconist signs add to the character of the setting.
A café terrace occupies the left foreground. Pedestrians cross the scene, their freely drawn silhouettes bringing movement to the composition. The architecture is simplified and expressive, creating an atmospheric interpretation of the neighbourhood.
Transparent washes of blue, pink, ochre and red contrast with bold dark outlines. These lines define the façades, windmill sails and figures, giving the work its lively graphic character. The varied colours and horizontal format make it an appealing decorative view of Paris.
The painting is undated and is presented as a twentieth-century work.
