Description
This after Bonnard oil painting is a small anonymous interpretation of Nude Against the Light, the composition painted by Pierre Bonnard around 1908 and held in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
Painted in oil on a wooden panel, it depicts a standing female nude in a domestic interior. Light enters through a curtained window behind the figure. A washstand and mirror appear on the left, while a pink-toned sofa fills the right side of the room.
Ochre, muted green and rose colours create a warm atmosphere. The dark silhouette of the hair contrasts with the lighter figure and window, while the surrounding furnishings establish the private character of the scene.
This interpretation differs from Bonnard’s composition in its drawing, facial features and decorative details. Its simplified forms and small dimensions give it an individual character as a decorative painting after the artist.
The panel is by an unidentified artist and is tentatively dated to the early twentieth century. The date circa 1908 belongs to Bonnard’s reference painting; this panel is not offered as a work painted by Bonnard himself.
The visible texture of the wooden support contributes to the surface appearance. At 18 × 13.8 cm, the painting has an intimate scale suited to a small display or a collection of figurative works.
