Description
Cannes Alpes-Maritimes is the setting of this original watercolour on paper, signed H. Gaudel and dated 1917. It depicts the Old Harbour, its historic lighthouse and the Esterel hills in a warm evening atmosphere.
A traditional fishing boat is moored beside a small wooden landing stage in the foreground. The artist carefully describes its curved hull, ropes and rigging, contrasting these precise details with the softer washes used for the surrounding landscape.
Beyond the boat, a long breakwater stretches across the composition. The white lighthouse rises against the distant hills, its reflection extending into the harbour water. A second sailing vessel appears farther to the right.
Warm ochre and golden tones dominate the sky, balanced by muted greens and blue-grey touches across the water. The small horizontal brushstrokes suggest gentle ripples, while the distant hills give depth to the scene. Together, these elements create a quiet and intimate view of the French Riviera.
The identification of Cannes is supported by comparisons with historical harbour views and by a second watercolour by the same artist depicting an identified Cannes location.
The signature H. Gaudel and the date 1917 appear at the lower left. Measuring 22.8 × 15 cm, this modestly sized work combines maritime detail with the decorative appeal of a Mediterranean coastal landscape. It will appeal to collectors of antique watercolours, French Riviera views and traditional sailing boats.
