Raphael Angel Engraving 1874 – Raphaël dans l’air

Description

This Raphael angel engraving from 1874 bears the French title “Raphaël dans l’air”, meaning “Raphael in the Air”. It depicts the archangel flying above clouds and a radiant horizon.

The winged figure fills the upper part of the composition. His outstretched arms, sweeping wings and flowing drapery create a strong sense of movement. Below him, rays of light emerge between dark clouds, forming a striking contrast with the surrounding sky.

The monochrome engraving brings out the individual feathers, folds of fabric and changing tones of the clouds. The composition combines a closely observed figure with an expansive celestial setting, giving the scene both detail and depth.

The printed French caption “RAPHAËL DANS L’AIR.” appears beneath the image. The artist and engraver remain unidentified.

An appealing nineteenth-century print for collectors interested in archangels, religious imagery and antique works on paper. Its vertical format and dramatic lighting also make it an attractive subject for display.
