Description
An attractive antique print of Lying Cow after Paulus Potter (1625–1654), issued by Amand-Durand around 1880 after a composition dating from approximately 1650.
The print bears Amand-Durand’s characteristic red stamp on the reverse identifying his edition.
The cow rests beside a rustic wooden fence, with a low horizon and sparse vegetation completing the rural setting. Fine lines describe the animal’s coat, horns and contours, while carefully worked shading gives depth and definition to the composition.
Printed on laid paper, the impression displays fine detail and strong contrast. The close observation of the animal and its surroundings reflects Potter’s interest in rural subjects. This small-format print will appeal to collectors of animal imagery, Dutch art and antique Amand-Durand editions.
