Description
France priest antique engraving dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880, and bearing the printed title “Le Livre défendu” — “The Forbidden Book.”
This highly detailed French wood engraving depicts an elegantly dressed young woman who appears to have fallen asleep in an armchair while a Catholic priest leans towards her. Dressed in a long black cassock and wearing a tricorne hat, the clergyman points towards the printed document in his hand as though questioning or reprimanding her over a prohibited book.
The composition creates a striking contrast between religious authority and private intellectual freedom. The priest embodies the moral supervision traditionally exercised over reading, while the young woman represents curiosity and the attraction of literature considered unsuitable or improper.
During the 19th century, sentimental novels, romantic stories and books regarded as morally questionable were sometimes discouraged or forbidden, particularly for young women. The scene therefore carries a gently satirical meaning related to education, censorship, religion and the freedom to read.
The young woman wears an elaborate dress with numerous folds and ruffles, together with a finely embroidered shawl. Her peaceful expression contrasts with the animated and admonishing attitude of the priest.
A cat seated prominently in the foreground looks directly towards the viewer. Its watchful expression introduces a familiar and slightly humorous element, making it appear as the silent witness to the confrontation.
The bourgeois interior is rendered with considerable precision. The carved armchair, patterned carpet, side table, books, furniture and wall hanging create a richly furnished domestic setting typical of the late 19th century.
The wood engraver’s dense network of lines produces a remarkable variety of tones and textures, particularly in the black cassock, the woman’s dress, the embroidered fabrics, the furniture and the cat’s fur.
