Description
Les Echelles in Savoie France is depicted in this original lithograph dated 1864 and based on a composition by Félix Benoist. The view combines village architecture with a lively riverside scene and the mountainous landscape of the French Alps.
A weir or hydraulic structure occupies the foreground, drawing attention to the relationship between the settlement and the water. Fishermen and local inhabitants animate the riverbank, giving the composition a human scale and an engaging sense of everyday life.
Beyond the water, the village extends towards the surrounding hills. Houses and the church form a varied architectural ensemble beneath the Alpine slopes. The composition brings together the built environment, rural activity and the natural setting of Les Echelles during the nineteenth century.
The foreground waterworks provide a particular point of interest. Alongside the village buildings and figures, they give this landscape documentary appeal for collectors interested in the history of Savoie, riverside settlements and traditional uses of water.
Printed on wove paper with margins, this antique lithograph offers a detailed period view suitable for a collection of French topographical prints. Its combination of architecture, figures and mountain scenery also makes it an attractive subject for framing.
