Description
St Jean de Maurienne Cathedral in Savoie France is depicted in this original lithograph dated 1864, based on a composition by Félix Benoist. Viewed from the sanctuary, the interior brings together architectural detail, carved furnishings and figures in period dress.
The composition draws the eye through the cathedral, emphasising the height of the vaults and the depth of the interior. Arches and successive architectural planes establish a spacious perspective, while the interplay of light and shadow gives definition to the stonework.
Carved wooden furnishings and richly decorated altars contribute to the character of the scene. Their intricate ornament contrasts with the larger architectural forms, offering details to explore throughout the image.
Figures in nineteenth-century clothing animate the interior and provide a sense of scale. Their presence gives this architectural view the atmosphere of an inhabited place of worship rather than an empty monument.
This St Jean de Maurienne lithograph combines the religious heritage of Savoie with the documentary appeal of a nineteenth-century topographical print. It will interest collectors of French church interiors, architectural views and compositions by Félix Benoist.
Printed on wove paper with generous margins, the sheet allows the image to be appreciated within its surrounding paper border. The detailed interior and strong perspective make it an attractive subject for framing.
