Aime c1864 France Savoie Félix Benoist Tarentaise Valley Lithograph

Description

Aime in Savoie France in an original lithograph dating from circa 1864 based on a composition by Félix Benoist. This panoramic view presents the village within the mountain landscape of the Tarentaise valley, combining Alpine scenery with a lively glimpse of rural life.

In the foreground, figures and livestock move along a stony path. Their presence gives scale to the landscape and introduces a pastoral element into this view of the settlement. The path draws the eye towards the buildings, linking the surrounding countryside with the village beyond.

The clustered houses and prominent church tower form the centre of the composition. Their compact arrangement contrasts with the open ground and the broad mountain slopes rising behind them. Architecture and countryside are closely connected, presenting Aime as part of its natural setting.

The surrounding mountains frame the village and give depth to the view. Subtle changes in tone distinguish the foreground from the more distant slopes, while the detailed rendering of buildings and terrain encourages closer examination. The composition brings together the intimate scale of village life and the wider expanse of the Alpine landscape.

Printed on fine wove paper, this nineteenth-century lithograph offers several collecting themes: Aime, the Tarentaise valley, Savoie, French village architecture and pastoral life. It would also make an attractive companion to other views of the French Alps.
