Description

Rembrandt male portrait interpreted in an antique drypoint by Charles Courtry dating from circa 1875.

This nineteenth-century print reproduces a composition by Rembrandt depicting a man with curly hair and a moustache. Strong contrasts of light and shadow bring out the sitter’s features against the darker background.

Fine engraved lines describe the face hair and clothing. The interplay of delicate detail and deep shadows gives the portrait an expressive character and a striking presence.

Printed on laid paper this work reflects the nineteenth-century interest in interpreting Old Master paintings through printmaking. It would suit a collection devoted to Rembrandt historical portraiture or French reproductive engraving.
